Abstract

This research is concerned with the classification of cold waves in Iraq and according to the selected study stations and their spatial divisions, as the cold waves will be divided according to their temporal distribution (annual and monthly) and the characteristics of the waves in terms of their intensity and length of stay according to each climatic station under study represented by the time period between 1972-1920 )) i.e. for a period of 48 years, divided into three climatic cycles, the length of each cycle is 17 years*) The first cycle extends from October 1972 to May 2004, and the second cycle extends from October 2004 to May The year 2004, and the third cycle extends from October 2004 to May 2020, and it became clear through the course of research that the total number of cold waves in the extended study years amounted to 246 (cold wave) and the third cycle represented the largest percentage of it with (94 wave) (38%) followed by the first cycle with (83) waves, i.e. (34%) and the lowest frequency recorded in the second session amounting to (69) waves and (28%), as for the study stations, the Baghdad station recorded the highest frequency of 66 waves ) Then comes the Mosul station with (54) waves) and recorded the two stations Humid and Basra, the sum of close frequencies amounting to (46) and 46 waves) for each of them, respectively, and the lowest frequencies recorded in the neighborhood station, which amounted to 39 (waves). As for the monthly distribution of cold waves, it differed between climatic cycles and according to the months, and the days of cold waves recurrences amounted to the years of study. The total number of 1685 days) the third cycle represented the largest percentage of it with a number of days of 653) days) i.e. 38.8%) followed by the second cycle with a number of days of 559 days) and at a rate of 33.2%) and the least wave days were recorded in the third cycle, which reached 473) days) with a rate of 28.1%), and with regard to the types of cold waves, the short waves recorded the highest frequency in the three climatic cycles. %), and then come the third wave (9 waves) and long waves (11%).
